パッションフルーツ Passion Fruit Plants

 近所のJAを覗いてみたら、ずいぶんとお買い得なパッションフルーツの苗があったので、つい持ち帰ってしまいました。最初は写真右の実着き苗だけを買うつもりで店内の他の部分も見て回っていたら、左の小苗があまりに安かったので、来年の花粉交換のために追加しました。（参考までに、左のは280円、右のは880円）

左のは黄色の実がなる品種、右のは日本で最も良く見る紫色の実がなる品種です。

When I saw the plant on the right with fruits on it, I could not resist.  The plant on the left was on another shelf in the shop, and I got it for cross pollination next year.

こちらは右の実着き苗。パッションフルーツはニガウリのように孫ヅルを出すと実が着くと、どこかで読んだことがありますが、よくぞこんな小さな行灯仕立てで実をつけるものだと栽培業者の腕に感心します。

黄色の実は紫のに比べてずっと大きいそうですが、苗の耐寒性は紫のほうが上だそうです。

そこで、どんだけ実のサイズに差があるのかとウィキを覗いてみたら、下の写真がありました。でも、説明文を読むと、紫の実のほうが酸味少なく風味豊かで美味しそうです。

Several distinct varieties of passion fruit with clearly differing exterior appearances exist.^[1] The bright yellow flavicarpa variety, also known as yellow or golden passionfruit, can grow up to the size of a grapefruit, has a smooth, glossy, light and airy rind, and has been used as a rootstock for purple passionfruit in Australia.^[1] The dark purple edulis variety is smaller than a lemon, though it is less acidic than yellow passionfruit, and has a richer aroma and flavour.
