朝散歩で Morning walk

 今朝のタイガは公園ではなく、住宅街の散歩を選びました（私は従者です）。石神井川にかかる新しい橋の工事現場の横を通ります。

This morning, Taiga wanted to walk through the residential area, instead of going to the park.  We passed the site where they are building a new bridge.

航空写真もあるので目を凝らして自宅を探しましたが、あまりにうちの建物が小さいせいか判別できませんでした。アバウトで言えば赤い〇のあたり。写真右下に示されている環七の交差点あたりに、乳製品目あてに行くスーパーがあります。3年くらい前までは黄色で示されている真っ直ぐな道がなかったので、住宅街をくねくね縫いながら自転車で坂を上っていくのは負担でした。今はこの黄色の道をまっしぐらなので、かなり気軽に行けるようになりました。

They have had this display explaining what they intend to do for years, and I have tried to spot my own house but my house is too small to be identified.  I should be somewhere within the red circle that I put on the photo.

城北公園とは反対方向に石神井川沿いを歩いていて、いつも左折するポイントに来ました。隅田川まで10.3キロの地点だそうです。元気な人なら歩いて隅田川へ到達できそう。

After walking along the river, we came to the usual point where we turn left.

ここの目の前には高稲荷神社があって、毎年春に区が狂犬病予防接種の会場を開くところです。

左折して歩いていると、民家の庭先に巨大な金魚の入った水槽のある家。

Nearby, there was a house with fish tanks in front of the garden.

丸々太った金魚たちです。夜にここを通ると水槽がライトアップされているので、さらに綺麗な光景です。

The gold fish are so huge.  When you walk by at night, the tanks are lit up and the fish look really beautiful.

間近で見ていたタイガを威嚇するように、大きな金魚がジャンプして天井のすだれに体当たり。タイガだけでなく私もビックリ。それであのペットボトルが置いてあるのですね。

As Taiga's face was getting too close to the tank, a huge fish jumped hitting the ceiling - now I understand why they have the water bottles.  Taiga was startled by the fish's warning and jumped back.

さらに歩いていると、むこうから穏やかな顔つきの柴犬がきました。名前はヤマト君で、タイガと同じ2013年の生まれ、タイガより２，３か月上です。

As we continued our walk, a gentle Shiba Inu came walking towards us.  According to the owners she is also 10 years old, and was born a few months earlier than Taiga.

10歳どうしの穏やかなお年寄り犬たち。

They are both so calm and gentle even though this is the first time meeting each other.

若いご夫婦で、タイガの毛並みを褒めてくださいました。

The young couple did not know Taiga's breed but complimented on Taiga's shiny coat.

さらにその先で見かけたシシユズの木。

A citrus tree next to a house.

シシユズはあまり利用価値が無い印象ですが、黄色く色づいたのが木にぶら下がっていると、道行く人の目を引きそう。

This variety is mainly ornamental - the flesh is dry and does not taste good.  However, when these fruits grow huge and yellow, it is a spectacle to see.

私の住んでいる桜台地区は起伏が多い地形なのですが、犬散歩のおかげでこういう坂道も平気に上るようになりました。赤い花が咲いています。

The area I live in is called Sakuradai, and "dai" means hills.  So, we have lots of steep slopes like this and, thanks to walking with Taiga, I have got used to them.  Having spotted red flowers, we went up to check.

濃い赤のアメリカフヨウ。果樹栽培に凝る前は、私も庭で毎年咲かせていた品種です。木本のように見えても宿根草なので、ほったらかしで毎年ハデハデな開花を楽しめます。あまりに目立つせいか、あるとき通りがかりの会社勤めの女の人が、「毎年この花を見るたびに、あー、今年も夏が来たと実感する」と、ため息まじりに話してくれたことがあります。

This is a perennial plant belonging to the hibiscus family, and was introduced from the US.  I used to grow this myself, before I got into growing fruit trees.  They are beautiful but take up a lot of space.

坂を上り切ったところにある民家のミカンの木は毎年豊作。

As we went along further, there was a tangerine orange tree next to a house.

グレープフルーツのように房成りです。

This tree is really prolific with the fruits growing like grapefruits.

公園で At the park

 ヤマト運輸の向かいの草地に着くと、珍しい光景に目が釘付け。若い男性が、ダチョウとカルガモのヒナをカゴから出して遊ばせていました。近くで見たかったので、タイガを離れたところに括り付けて近づきました。

ダチョウのヒナには著しい体格差がありますが、小さいほうは一月あとに孵化したヒナだそうです。品種に関しては話の内容から、昔私がイギリス下宿していたお屋敷で飼われていたのと同じ、大型のきわめて獰猛な白いガチョウと同じようです。その家には他に、ちょうど私が引っ越してきた頃に生まれた希少品種のスコットランド原産の羊やニワトリのヒナたちもいて、子羊や雛たちは刷り込み効果で私に懐いていたのに、昔からいたガチョウたちは私のスキを見ては襲おうとしていました。何で鳥好きの私がこんな目に会うの、と思いながらニワトリのヒナたちにパンを分けてやっていると、ガチョウたちが大声を上げながらやってきてニワトリたちを追いやってパンを狙っていました。なので、いまだに悪い印象しかない。

When we arrived at the usual field, there was an unusual sight.  A young man with a brood of baby ducks and baby geese.  The deep yellow chick is one month younger than the cream-coloured one, and these will eventually grow into large, snow white geese, and very fierce ones.

カルガモのヒナたちは幼すぎるのか、うずくまったまま動きません。飼い主さんの話では、刷り込み効果でヒナたちはお互いとても仲が良くて、特に一番大きな白い子は他の子たちを守ろうとするそうです。

The ducks are too young to be moving about but all the chicks are very gentle with each other, with the larger goose chick being protective of others.

黄色のヒナがちょこちょこ歩いているうちにずっこけたら、すかさず大きいほうが心配そうにチェックしていました。

When the yellow one lost its balance while walking, the larger one immediately went to check if the young one was all right.

こんなに穏やかなガチョウは初めてみます。成長したら豹変して良き「番犬」になるのでしょうけど。

スモモとリンゴ Plum and apple

 ２階バルコニーでケイパーが咲き続けています。どの花も夕方に開き始めて、翌朝、日が高くなるにつれて干からびてしまいます。なので、今日の写真も早朝（5:30am）に撮ったもの。実のほうは一個も生っていませんが、今年は花が見られただけでも満足です。

Caper flowers are continuing to bloom.  However, each flower lasts only one night - the flower starts opening in the evening and it withers as the sun rises high the next morning.  These photos were taken at 5:30 a.m. this morning, when the flowers were still beautiful.

同じくバルコニーに置いてある八重咲のジャスミン。夏の開花期間の最後の1輪を今朝収穫しました。ひと月ほどで体力を回復して、秋にまた咲くはずです。冬の間、紅茶でジャスミンティーを楽しむのが恒例になっています。

The last of jasmine flowers from the summer blooming season.  The plant will rest for about a month and then start flowering again in autumn.  I preserve these flowers in the freezer so that I can enjoy black tea with jasmine fragrance during the winter months.

スモモのエレファントハートは、今年は２個しか生りませんでした。１個は野鳥に落とされたけど、袋掛けしておいたこの１個が今朝袋の中で落ちていました。

"Elephant Heart" plum that had fallen this morning.  This is a variety introduced from the US and regarded as a great pollinator.  I grow this variety for the delicious taste.

スモモを見たあと、リンゴの紅玉をイジイジしていたら、ポロッ！　まだ青いのに！

As I was lightly touching the "Kogyoku" apple to see how it was getting along, it fell into my hands!  I am sure I never pulled it.

貴重な収穫なので、まずはエレファントハートの糖度を測定。28.2度で、予想を上回った。実際に食べてみると、いつもの「旨いスモモ」で大満足。ただし、個人的な好みなので他の人がどう感じるか、分かりません。実際、電話で食味について質問したとき、苗の販売元の社長夫人はエレファントハートのことを「美味しくない」と評価していたくらいです。私的には、例えるなら、食味・色ともにオレンジ界のモロのような存在です。今回は収穫直後に食べてしまいましたが、ちゃんと追熟させると果肉は暗い赤になります。果肉の離核性も私にとって大きな魅力。

The Elephant Heart plum's sugar content was 28.2% which is very high for a plum.  Apart from the great taste, another reason why I like this variety is that the stone comes off relatively easily.  The flesh would become dark red if left ripening off the tree, which is another good point.

紅玉のほうは糖度が15.4度と、意外と高い。強烈なエレファントハートを食べた後では、紅玉の味は分かりませんでした。

The sugar content of the apple was surprisingly high with 15.4%, considering that it came off prematurely.  This variety comes into season in late September to October.  

朝散歩 Morning Walk

 公園へ向かう途中に会った初対面の子。私と目が合ったとたん小走りに寄ってきてくれました。豆柴サイズの女の子で、１歳のテンちゃん。年齢柄、わちゃわちゃしているので、まともに顔写真はとれませんでした。

A new face we met on our way to the park: one-year old, female Black Shiba Inu named "Ten".  The moment our eyes met, she came rushing towards me.  She was such an excited puppy that I could not take decent photos of her sweet face.

私と挨拶したあとは、タイガに向かいました。

She then directed her attention to Taiga.

タイガは10歳ともなると、おこちゃまには興味ないので知らんぷりしたいところですが、

Taiga being a 10-year old Kaiken, she takes little interest in meeting youngsters.  Although she would rather ignore Ten,

テンちゃんはおかまいなし。ズカズカと臭い嗅ぎまで始めました。タイガは相手の年齢や図体にかかわらず、誰に臭い嗅ぎされても怒らないです。

the puppy did not care about Taiga's aloofness.  She even started to take a sniff.  Good job that Taiga never gets upset when strangers try to sniff, whatever their age or size.

テンちゃん、これを他のワンコにするときはシメられないよう相手を選んでね。

I hope Ten is careful when choosing the dog to sniff at.

公園に着いてタイガは冷たい草の上でスリゴロ。昨夜のうちに少し雨が降ったようで、まだ露が残っていました。

It had rained during the night and the grass was nice and cool.  So, Taiga started rolling over the grass as soon as we arrived at the park.

この城北公園にはアオギリの木が数本ありますが、この１本は他のアオギリとは離れて孤高の存在。遠くからみても目立ちます。ただし、高木であること以外、名前のわりには桐の木に似ていません。

A tree that stands out even from a distance: Firmiana simples 

写真ではなかなか捉えられないけど、主幹や枝がうっすらとコケ蒸したように緑色っぽいです。中国南部や東南アジア原産だそうです。

The tree originates in South East Asia and South China, but they grow very well in Japan, too.  I love looking at this tree so much that I pay my respect to it in my heart every time I pass through this part of the park.
